Emre on the move in January

Midfielder Emre Belozoglu expects to leave Fenerbahce in January, and wants to try his luck in one of Europe s top leagues before retiring.

The 31-year-old has spent the past three seasons in Istanbul after his transfer from English Premier League club Newcastle United in July 2008, but revealed he has become disillusioned with life in Turkey.

Emre had been dragged into the match-fixing scandal involving the club, while the national team s Euro 2012 playoff defeat to Croatia has further prompted his need for change.

The last period (failure in the playoffs) came on top of everything else, and it s wearing me down, Emre told Internetspor. I want to play in Europe one last time.

In addition, a report in Vatan on Tuesday has claimed that talks over a new deal have ground to a halt.

Emre s contract expires at the end of the season, but Fenerbahce are reportedly reluctant to meet his demands of 3.5 million euros per annum.

The report also speculated that Portuguese giants Benfica are the leading suitors for the former Inter Milan man s signature, with meetings between both parties set to commence during the coming month.

Fenerbahce are currently top of the Super Lig, three points clear of second-placed Galatasaray.
